This is a powerful verse. It doesn’t say “what anyone wants from me will get it” no it is a bit different to that. In saying that I have heard it interpreted to that it summarised to that.
- if you remain in me – to do this we need to know what he wants, and what he expects from us. We need to understand who he is if we are to remain in him. It doesn’t say mostly in him, it says remain in him and not swayed.
- and my words remain in you – to do this, we need to meditate on his words regularly. When doing this, it will change our heart and mind as well as our wishes. So we wouldn’t ask him for the latest car or phone. Our needs should be much different to someone who doesn’t have His words remain in us. Again, this doesn’t say our words are to be mostly in us or sometimes
- ask whatever you wish – if we remain in him and his words remain in us, then what we ask for will be of him. Our requests should be different to before we remained in him and before we knew and meditated on his words.
- it will be done for you – this may not be done the way you want it done. But since we know his words, and we are going to remain in him, the method isn’t important. We might even experience something that we can learn from. We do know that we will do it for us as he loves us.
Isn’t it great that we serve and worship a God that is not there just to be served and worshipped, but he wants to do something for us. He loves us so much that he even died for us.
Let’s remain in him and remain in his words.
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
